I enjoyed the story about the slaves given safe haven at Fort Monroe, Va. I worked at the fort in 1972 when I was in college and always felt like I was going back in time, going through the casemates and crossing the bridge. I felt safe there for some unexplained reason. Knowing that it was a slave refuge and that the Union army protected our ancestors gives me great pride. Hampton University nearby stands strong as a testament to Black intelligence and initiative. I have always loved Virginia, my birth home, and its history.
