African-American history has played an integral role in the shaping of politics, economics, and culture in the United States. Growing up, how did you learn about the accomplishments and struggles of African Americans? Were you in a classroom? Reading a book? Talking with relatives or friends? How has your understanding or knowledge of African-American history changed and/or developed over time? What do you think is the most effective way to pass along this rich and growing history to future generations?

Calvin Horton

Greetings. I am Calvin Horton, I was born in  Enfield, NC, during the Jim Crow days. I am proud to be an offspring of slaves, and to know about my ancestors is one of the most important blessings in my life. During those days we lived as share croppers. My baby sister and her friend were and still are members of the NAACP. Yes, all the stories that you see or hear about are true — fire hoses, dog the work, but they made a difference in our time and in our lives, even in mine, from not so-called hatred but to understanding. If our children could just take a little time to just read, ask, or seek about their heritage…Prof. Gates. thank you for all you do….Blessings.
