Many Rivers to Cross
African-American history has played an integral role in the shaping of politics, economics, and culture in the United States. Growing up, how did you learn about the accomplishments and struggles of African Americans? Were you in a classroom? Reading a book? Talking with relatives or friends? How has your understanding or knowledge of African-American history changed and/or developed over time? What do you think is the most effective way to pass along this rich and growing history to future generations?

Born in Guilford County, North Carolina, in 1888 & 1890 this lovely duo is Marvin & Mattie Brooks, affectionately known as “Papa & Granny.”  Together they raised 15 children. They are the parents of my grandmother who was the eldest sister of the bunch. They owned a nice size farm on what is now called Pisgah Church Rd. in Greensboro, NC, and many elite whites came to them for their prime dairy and meat products. North Carolina A&T State University was erected in 1893, so needless to say, this college served as a kind of rites of passage for generations in our family. If you didn’t graduate, you had to at least go there before you could go on other adventures. I am more than proud to have their blood flowing through my body and I give thanks to them and God everyday for their ability to be entrepreneurs during some of the hardest times. If they can do it I have no excuses.
