About the Choreographers

The modern dance choreographers Alwin Nikolais (Nov. 25, 1910 – May 8, 1993) and Murray Louis (b. Nov. 4, 1926) jointly and individually led many companies, including the Playhouse Dance Company, the Alwin Nikolais Dance Company, the Nikolais Dance Theatre, the Murray Louis Dance Company, and the Murray Louis and Alwin Nikolais Dance Company. The two worked together from the late 1940s until Nikolais’ death in 1993. The two developed the Nikolais/Louis dance technique together. In 1999, the dance companies representing their work were phased out.
