UPDATE July 1, 2015: Misty Copeland was promoted from soloist to principal dancer at American Ballet Theatre on June 30, 2015.
Misty Copeland joined American Ballet Theatre in 2001 and is its third African-American female soloist and the first in two decades. Ric Burns’ documentary on the 75-year history of the preeminent ballet company includes rehearsal footage and interviews with Copeland.
“I’m just so proud to be a part of this company’s history,” says Copeland, “because it is American, and it represents what America is. And I am that.”
