Nominations for the 41st Annual News and Documentary Emmy® Awards were announced by The National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences (NATAS). American Masters is honored to celebrate three nominations for its special presentation of Toni Morrison: The Pieces I Am, directed by Timothy Greenfield-Sanders.

Toni Morrison: The Pieces I Am is an artful and intimate meditation on the legendary Nobel and Pulitzer Prize-winning author that examines her life, her works and the powerful themes she has confronted throughout her literary career. Woven together with a rich collection of art, history, literature and personality, the film includes discussions about her many critically acclaimed works, and interviews with Hilton Als, Angela Davis, Fran Lebowitz, Walter Mosley, Sonia Sanchez and Oprah Winfrey, who turned “Beloved” into a feature film. Using director Timothy Greenfield-Sanders’ elegant portrait-style interviews, Toni Morrison: The Pieces I Am includes original music by Kathryn Bostic, a specially created opening sequence by artist Mickalene Thomas and evocative works by other contemporary African American artists including Kara Walker, Rashid Johnson and Kerry James Marshall. Produced by Timothy Greenfield-Sanders, Johanna Giebelhaus, Chad Thompson, and Tommy Walker. Executive produced by Michael Kantor.

The awards will be presented in two individual ceremonies, the documentary categories will be streamed live Tuesday, September 22nd, 2020 at 8 p.m. EDT on NATAS’ dedicated viewing platform powered by Vimeo, on watch.theemmys.tv and via The Emmys® apps for iOS, tvOS, Android, FireTV, and Roku (full list at apps.theemmys.tv).
The 41st. Annual News & Documentary Emmy® Awards honor programming content from more than 2000 submissions from calendar-year 2019, judged by a pool of 875 peer professionals from across the television and streaming/digital media News & Documentary industry.
