“Amyra León: Strange Grace” from filmmaker Malika Zouhali-Worrall provides a portrait of Amyra León, the musician, poet, author and activist who channels deeply personal experiences of pain and healing into raw, majestic, and often cathartic performances that celebrate love, Blackness and womanhood.

Two American Masters initiatives have been nominated for an NAACP Image Award in the category of Outstanding Short-Form Series – Reality/Nonfiction: Unladylike2020 and In the Making. Both series are streaming now on the American Masters website.

Illuminating the stories of extraordinary American heroines from the early years of feminism, Unladylike2020 is a multimedia series consisting of a one-hour special for broadcast (Unladylike2020: The Changemakers) and 26 digital short films featuring courageous, little-known and diverse female trailblazers from the turn of the 20th century. Narrated by Julianna Margulies (“ER,” “The Good Wife”) and Lorraine Toussaint (“Selma,” “Orange is the New Black”), the series of 26 8-to-10 minute animated shorts features stories of activists, musicians, artists and scientists.

In the Making is a documentary short film series following the lives and journeys of eight emerging BIPOC (Black, Indigenous and people of color) cultural artists who bring insight and originality to their artistic craft. Featuring eight cinematic and character-driven shorts by emerging BIPOC filmmakers, most of whom graduated from Firelight Media’s Documentary Lab, In the Making explores the artistic process of up-and-coming creatives through non-fiction storytelling.

Recognized as the nation’s preeminent multicultural awards show from an African American perspective, the NAACP Image Awards celebrates the outstanding achievements and performances of people of color in the arts and those who promote social justice through their creative work.

The 52nd NAACP Image Awards will broadcast live on BET Saturday, February 20, 2021, at 8:00 PM ET.

The virtual ceremonies will recognize winners in more than 60 non-televised award categories in the fields of television and streaming, music, literature, film, and activism.

The other nominees in the category include “Benedict Men” from Quibi, “Between the Scenes – The Daily Show” from Comedy Central, and the “Inspire Change Series” from the NFL Network.
