Ricky Jay learned much from magician Charlie Miller (1909 – 1989) about how to refine his practice and make a move better each time he performs it. Despite the sometimes maddening repetition and level of questioning Miller demanded in pursuit of a perfect move, Jay describes working on sleight-of-hand with him “as close to pure joy as anything that I can imagine.” This film excerpt includes archival footage of Charlie Miller working with cards.
American Masters – Ricky Jay: Deceptive Practice premieres Friday, January 23 at 9 pm on PBS.
