Meeting Harper Lee: Exclusive Report from Filmmaker

Harper Lee: American Masters documentary filmmaker and author Mary McDonagh Murphy met with Harper Lee and Lee’s close friend and benefactor Joy Brown on June 30, 2015, in Monroeville, Alabama at The Prop & Gavel restaurant prior to the publication of Lee’s second novel, Go Set a Watchman. Murphy reports on her meeting with Lee about the new novel and shares interviews with Lee’s lawyer, Tonja B. Carter, Lee’s current literary agent, Andrew Nurnberg, and Lee’s friend Wayne Flynt, an Alabama historian. The report features never-before-seen photos of Lee, who when presented with a printed copy of her new novel for the first time, remarked, “Wonderful.”

Go Set a Watchman centers on Jean Louise “Scout” Finch, the young protagonist from To Kill a Mockingbird, as she returns to Maycomb, Alabama as a grown woman in the 1950s.
