Marvin Hamlisch is a mensch. What is a mensch, you ask? The term comes from the Yiddish, for “human being,” but is used to describe a person of integrity and honor.
The composer Marvin Hamlisch offered his genuine concern, time, money and problem-solving skills to everyone in his life, from friends to Broadway cast members to taxi drivers to those planning special events for the president of the United States and heads of state. Some people only found out after the fact what Hamlisch had done on their behalf. Hamlisch never drew attention to his countless acts of kindness to friends, colleagues and strangers, but after his death in 2012, his wife Terre Blair Hamlisch received tens of thousands of letters from people who shared stories of how Hamlisch had personally helped them in their time of need.
Marvin Hamlisch: What He Did For Love premieres nationally Friday, December 27, 2013 at 9 p.m. on PBS.
