My mother Arlene Patricia Corbett began her professional career as a secretary and through her diligence became the first Direct Marketing Manager at both Smithsonian and The New Yorker magazines in the 1980s. She had aspirations of moving further in the world of publishing but she was hit by a car and died in April, 1989. You never know what an impact someone has in the lives of others until they are gone. At her wake and funeral people I had never met approached me telling me what a wonderful woman my mother was. As a single black mom she inspired me and others and I can only stand in the shadow of her greatness and hope to inspire others as well.
