Today in History: We Remember March 16th, 2021
One year ago, on March 16, 2021, a gunman murdered eight people in attacks on three separate nail salons across the metropolitan Atlanta area. Six of his eight victims were women of Asian descent.
At the time, President Biden condemned the mass shooting and said the tragedy was part of a “skyrocketing spike” in violence against Asian-Americans. Since then, hate crimes against AAPI communities have continued to rise. According to Stop AAPI Hate, 10,905 incidents were recorded between March 2020 and December 2021. Of those, 61.8% were reported by women.
This week, Robert Peterson the son of Atlanta victim, Yong Ae Yue, gathered with his family, friends, and community, to reflect on the year since his mother’s death. His story will be featured later this spring in a new documentary, “Rising Against Asian Hate: One Day in March.”
Throughout this week, communities across the country are commemorating this anniversary and remembering the victims.
