In Manchester, New Jersey, the Rivas family was just about to finish construction on their new home when it was burned to the ground in an arson attack earlier this month. They are not Jewish, but their house was burned in what New Jersey Attorney General Matthew Platkin said was “a bias crime spree.” The suspect was also caught on camera painting swastikas on several other homes.
The Rivas family is receiving support from a new coalition of Toms River residents and from the Orthodox Jewish community. Ashley Lamb is leading a coalition to help the family. Lamb launched a GoFundMe campaign, while her attorney-husband is representing the family on a pro bono basis.
“I’m determined on rebuilding because it’s not just about me. It’s about showing people that bad things happen but better things can come and then God has everything under control,” Brenda Rivas said.
“There has been some strife between segments of the communities for various reasons, and that is all resolved ironically, partly through this. People are coming together. People’s hearts are opening up. And we want people to believe in the town, Manchester people, to believe in the town and do the right thing. And get us all together and rebuild this house for the Rivases,” said Frank Nicolato, aide to the mayor of Manchester Township.
