In her interview tonight on MetroFocus in the New York City metropolitan area, Anna Deavere Smith speaks about race, her hometown of Baltimore, and her current work-in-progress, The Pipeline Project. The project examines the cycle of suspension from school to incarceration, particularly for students of color, in what has been termed the “school to prison pipeline.”
Anna Deavere Smith’s extraordinary work as an actress, playwright, professor, author and social activist comes together in her signature form of documentary theater, in which she interviews people and then creates and performs them as characters.
Her past theatrical works on race and social issues include her acclaimed one-woman programs Twilight: Los Angeles, which Great Performances will air on June 12 at 9 pm, and Fires in the Mirror: Crown Heights, Brooklyn and Other Identities, which was broadcast on PBS under American Playhouse.
