Great Performances mourns the passing of singer and actress Barbara Cook whose appearance in the legendary “Follies in Concert” was memorably captured by the series in a 1986 documentary. Cook’s incredible multi-decade career (her first musical “Flahooley” was in 1951) included original roles in such beloved shows as “The Music Man,” “She Loves Me,” and “Candide.” The lesser-known shows live on through their treasured original cast albums including “The Gay Life,” “The Grass Harp,” and “Plain and Fancy.” But she’d go on singing almost to the end thanks to her second career as a highly regarded cabaret and concert artist. And her last Broadway show was “Sondheim on Sondheim” in 2010. She received many accolades throughout the nearly six-decade career including the Kennedy Center Honors in 2011.
