Great Performances mourns the passing of Eli Wallach (1915 – 2014), an immensely talented and prolific character actor who graced the stage and the screens of both television and film. He died on Tuesday, June 24, 2014. He was 98 years old.
Mr. Wallach was perhaps most recognized for his notable film roles including Clark Gable’s mechanic sidekick, Guido, in The Misfits (1961), Tuco in Clint Eastwood’s The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly (1966), and as Mafia don, Don Altebello in The Godfather: Part III (1990).
Mr. Wallach was also an actor who had many television appearances throughout his career, and we are proud to note that he was featured on Great Performances as part of our Theater In America presentation of Clifford Odets’ Paradise Lost in 1974 as well as a 2002 documentary about the making of the famous Clark Gable western The Misfits, aptly titled Making The Misfits.
