As many outlets predicted, Lin-Manuel Miranda’s Broadway blockbuster (and perpetually sold-out) Hamilton has made history with 16 nominations, beating out the previous record of 15 nominations held by Billy Elliot (2001) and The Producers (2009). The show’s nominations include Best Costume Design, Best Choreography and Best Musical, while creator Lin-Manuel Miranda himself earned three individual awards: Best Book, Best Original Score and Best Performance by a Lead Actor in a Musical.

The revolutionary musical premiered on Broadway at the Richard Rodgers Theatre on August 6, 2015, and has earned unprecedented ticket sales and rave reviews from both critics and audiences ever since. In order to shed light on the show’s inspiring and sensational road to success, Great Performances will air Hamilton’s America, a feature film documentary providing intimate access to Lin-Manuel Miranda and his colleagues during the two years leading up to the show’s Broadway opening. The documentary includes interviews, new footage of the production in New York, and cast-led expeditions to DC, Philadelphia and New York, and will air in the fall of 2016.
Will Hamilton be able to break The Producers’ record-setting 12 Tony Award wins? We’ll have to wait until June to find out. Until then, there’s one thing we can confidently say to the Hamilton team: “History has its eyes on you.”
Congrats to EVERYONE this season. You got your show up. You get to do what you love. You're in the play.
