SHARE

GREAT PERFORMANCES mourns the passing of Diahann Carroll, the groundbreaking star of Broadway, film and television. After her film debut in “Carmen Jones” (1954), Carroll made her Broadway debut in “House of Flowers” (1958), winning a Best Actress Tony Award for “No Strings” (1962). She made history with the 1968 television series “Julia,” marking the first time an African American woman had starred in a sitcom playing a character who was not a domestic worker. Her appearances on GREAT PERFORMANCES include “Porgy and Bess: An American Voice” (1988), “The Best of Broadway” (1985), and “Broadway Sings: The Music of Jule Styne” (1987). The above clip is from “Broadway Sings” where Carroll performs “Just In Time” with her husband Vic Damone.
