Great Performances: Sondheim – The Birthday Concert

GREAT PERFORMANCES mourns the passing of Stephen Sondheim, one of the most influential and groundbreaking composers of the American musical theater.  Over the years Sondheim’s shows and music have been memorably featured on the series, including “Bernstein Conducts West Side Story” (1985), “Sweeney Todd” (1985), “Follies in Concert” (1986), “Sondheim: A Celebration at Carnegie Hall” (1993), “Company” (2008 and 2013), “Sondheim! The Birthday Concert” (2010), and “Gypsy” (2016).  Sondheim also made a memorable cameo appearance as the piano player Maxie Schwartz in the Theater in America presentation of “June Moon” in 1974.

To honor his incredible contribution to the performing arts, we asked our fans in our Broadway’s Best Facebook group what some of their favorite Stephen Sondheim songs were. Listen to the playlist below to hear some of their selections.
