GREAT PERFORMANCES mourns the passing of groundbreaking playwright, author, director and actor Sam Shepard, who passed away on July 27, 2017.  In 1998, GP memorably presented the documentary “Sam Shepard: Stalking Himself,” which examined the enduring power of Shepard’s plays and his vision of the mythical landscapes of America and its people, featuring the first in-depth on-camera interview that Shepard had ever granted.  In addition, “Stalking Himself” was paired with a special encore of “True West” starring John Malkovich and Gary Sinise, which had originally been a presentation of AMERICAN PLAYHOUSE in 1984.  And in November 2016, the New Group’s acclaimed revival of Shepard’s Pulitzer Prize-winning play “Buried Child” starring Ed Harris and Amy Madigan was broadcast on THIRTEEN’s Off-Broadway showcase THEATER CLOSE-UP.
