In 1976 he was Music Director of the 100th-anniversary production of Wagner’s Ring at the Bayreuth Festival and returned to conduct the cycle again at the next four festivals.

His tenure as principal guest conductor of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra began in 1995, the year he turned 70 and was named “Artist of the Year” by Gramophone. In 2006 he was appointed Conductor Emeritus of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra.

He served as director of the Lucerne Festival Academy as recently as 2014.
