Famous Sites in Vienna

The Sound of Music, starring Julie Andrews, introduced millions of Americans to Austria’s Alpine landscape and the charming streets, palaces and convent in Salzburg. More recently, Andrews has helped spotlight landmarks of Vienna, Austria’s capital and largest city, in the New Year’s Day broadcast, From Vienna: The New Year’s Celebration. This year marks Andrews’ fifth time hosting Vienna’s annual tradition.

“As often as I’ve come to this simply gorgeous city, its beauty and charms enchant me as they did the very first time,” says Andrews. “Each year, I find myself quite swept away by Vienna’s extraordinary beauty.”

The concert takes place in the Musikverein hall, home to the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra, but Andrews provides a look at several famous sites in the former imperial city of the Habsburg Empire: The Wiener Musikverein Concert Hall; the Porcelain Museum in the Augarten; the Palais Liechtenstein (The City Palace), where the program’s ballet segments were filmed; the Sigmund Freud Museum, and the Klosterneuburg Abbey north of the city.
