Season 13 of Great Performances at the Met continues Sunday, July 7 at 12 p.m. on PBS (check local listings) with Donizetti’s romantic comedy La Fille du Regiment. Pretty Yende stars as Marie, the adopted daughter of the 21st regiment of the French army, alongside Javier Camarena as her lover Tonio, Stephanie Blythe as the Marquise of Berkenfield and Maurizio Muraro as Sulpice. Film icon Kathleen Turner makes her Met debut as the Duchess of Krakenthorp. Enrique Mazzola conducts.

Laurent Pelly’s production is set in the Tyrolean Mountains where Marie is questioned by sergeant Sulpice about a young man she was spotted with. Marie admits that she has been seeing Tonio, a Tyrolean who saved her life despite being a member of the opposition. Following the admission, Tonio arrives to the mountains as a prisoner of the 21st regiment, but manages to escape and profess his love to Marie. Despite mutual feelings, Marie informs Tonio that she can only marry a soldier from the 21st regiment, prompting Tonio to enlist. Later, the Marquise of Berkenfield reveals to Sulpice that Marie is her long-lost niece. She then forces Marie to leave the regiment and arranges for her to marry a nephew of the Duchess of Krakenthorp. Now amongst the ranks of nobility, Marie must confront a dark family secret while choosing between an arranged marriage and a life with the man she loves. Nadine Sierra hosts.
