Jules Massenet’s opera Werther is a tragic romance based on Goethe’s autobiographical novel The Sorrows of Young Werther, the epitome of the Sturm und Drang Romantic movement in German literature. These fine photos of the new Met production Werther show tenor Jonas Kaufmann (Werther) and mezzo-soprano Sophie Koch (Charlotte) expressing the throes of unrequited love. The star-crossed lovers Werther and Charlotte are doomed since Charlotte promised her dying mother she would marry Albert.
