Twelve-time GRAMMY winner Kirk Franklin talks about Lifetime Achievement Award honoree Shirley Caesar, who performs “Jesus, I Love Calling Your Name” at the GRAMMY Salute To Music Legends 2017™ and expresses gratitude for receiving the honor.

In collaboration with the Recording Academy, GREAT PERFORMANCES presents Grammy Salute To Music Legends 2017, the second annual all-star concert offering a spotlight for the Academy’s 2017 Special Merit Awards recipients. pastor Shirley Caesar is more than a legend she is a landmark so I'm here tonight to say to Shirley we love you and we thank you because anyone who tries to raise the voice and lift the human spirit is standing on the shoulders of the first lady of gospel give it up y'all Shirley Caesar yeah well what I did is I put together medley of Shirley Caesar songs I did about seven or eight song [Music] [Music] and if songs that dealt first of all them together and kind of give the breath of her music career [Music] [Applause] I don't hope I did a good job if not I know I'm gonna get a whuppin when I get on stage from sure [Music] [Applause] I have no idea well the Lord has blessed me so immeasurably well you know sheshe had a charisma back in the day back in the 60s and 70s then she kind of brought a system entertainment to the table and I really really love that about her and she still can do that now like I mean she is still a dynamic before me there was a time of quite sure that performing was frowned upon you know when you thought of gospel music and religious music she understood that to get the people engaged in the message we had to feed on first and so you feed him with that entertainment and they feel good that she didn't work [Music] God has blessed me what made to this become theater to receive a Lifetime Achievement Award [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] Oh [Applause]
