As the Revolutionary war raged on Washington looked for an assistant. He found young Alexander Hamilton, an artilleryman in New York.
As Aide-de-camp to Washington Hamilton wrote letters, reported intelligence and carried out prisoner exchanges.
Hamilton was unfulfilled and begged Washington for a field position.
Washington granted this request for the 1781 Battle of Yorktown.
During the battle Hamilton led a bayonette charge and captured the fortification within 10 minutes.
Winning this battle made it clear the United States would emerge the victor of the war.
