♪♪ -Next, on "Great Performances"... with its sweeping Tchaikovsky score, "The Nutcracker" has been at the heart of every holiday season since its Russian premiere in 1892.
♪♪ In this adaptation by the English National Ballet, the classic tale blends together the timeless traditions of "Nutcrackers" past with the fresh energy and color of its stunning sets and costume designs.
The story follows Clara and her beloved Nutcracker doll on her fantastical journey from the streets of Edwardian London through a dazzling world made of ice, to a grand celebration arranged by the Sugar Plum Fairy in the land of sweets and delights.
More than 100 dancers and musicians take part in this enchanting ballet, drawing both longtime fans and new audiences into its magical embrace.
