ELCA Elects First Openly Gay Lutheran Bishop

ELCA First gay bishop Guy ErwinThe Evangelical Lutheran Church in America has elected its first openly gay bishop, Reverend R. Guy Erwin. Erwin will oversee churches in southern California. In a controversial vote four years ago, the ELCA changed its policy to allow gay and lesbian clergy. Since then, some 600 congregations have left the four-million-member denomination.
