Pope Francis this week named a new Vatican Secretary of State, the second highest position in the Vatican after the Pope. Francis chose Italian Archbishop Pietro Parolin, a longtime member of the Vatican diplomatic corps. Parolin is described as a moderate. He replaces Cardinal Tarcisio Bertone, who served under former Pope Benedict, and faced criticism for his handling of the Vatican bureaucracy.
