Pope Francis’s global popularity continues to soar. According to a new poll by the Spanish-language broadcaster Univision, 87 percent of Catholics around the world rate the pope’s job performance as “excellent” or “good.” But the survey of more than 12,000 Catholics in 12 countries found sharp divisions over many church teachings. The vast majority of African and Asian Catholics oppose allowing priests to marry, but strong majorities in the US and Europe support it. And while 99 percent of African Catholics oppose gay marriage, only 40 percent of American Catholics do.
