The US Supreme Court declined to get involved in a longstanding property dispute between the Episcopal Church and a conservative breakaway congregation in Virginia. Eight years ago, the more than 2,000-member Falls Church voted to leave the denomination, in part because of differences on gay issues. The congregation argued it should be able to keep its millions of dollars of property, including a church with ties to George Washington. But local courts ruled the property belonged to the Virginia diocese of the Episcopal Church, and the breakaway group has been worshipping at alternative sites. With legal appeals exhausted, they’ll now have to find a new permanent location.
