UCC Clergy Sue North Carolina Over Free Exercise of Religion and Ban on Gay Marriage

gay-marriage-HEAD-smThe United Church of Christ and several local clergy filed an unusual lawsuit this week arguing that North Carolina’s ban on same-sex marriage violates their religious freedom. Many groups oppose gay marriage on religious grounds. But this lawsuit claims that because performing marriages is a religious act, the state is denying clergy who support gay marriage the ability to exercise their faith.
