In Sudan, Meriam Ibrahim, a Christian woman on death row for refusing to renounce her faith, was freed from prison Monday (June 23) after an appeals court threw out her apostasy conviction. Ibrahim had been sentenced to be executed after a court ruled that her marriage to Daniel Wani, a US Christian, was invalid. Ibrahim’s father was a Muslim, but she was raised in the Christian faith of her mother. In Sudan, children must belong to the religion of their father. Ibrahim gave birth to a daughter in prison, and the couple also has a toddler son. The case generated an international outcry. Ibrahim was briefly detained again Tuesday, along with her family, while trying to leave Sudan. At the end of the week, the family was given refuge by the US embassy.
