The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, the Mormons, has been conducting an Internet campaign of transparency about its history. A recent subject is the marital status of the church’s founder and prophet, Joseph Smith, long admired by Mormons as an exemplary man. Now the church acknowledges that Smith had up to 40 wives, some already married and one just 14 years old.
