In the U.S., Holy Week (March 29 – April 4) was an occasion for nearly 400 prominent Catholic and evangelical leaders to urge an end to the death penalty. They alluded to Jesus’ death on the cross, saying that “torture and execution is always a profound evil.” One of the signers was the president of the National Latino Evangelical Coalition, which voted unanimously to oppose capital punishment. Many evangelicals support the death penalty.
