People of faith were among those taking part in protests and vigils after an unarmed African-American man was shot and killed by a white police officer in South Carolina. The officer claimed self-defense, but a bystander’s video showed the officer shot eight times at the man’s back as he fled. The officer was charged with murder and fired after the video came to light. Several religious leaders called for more justice and transparency in law enforcement, citing Ferguson and other incidents involving unarmed black men.
