Pope Francis has accepted the resignation of Bishop Robert Finn of Kansas City Missouri. Finn was convicted in criminal court in 2012 for failing to report a priest who was suspected of child abuse. The Vatican said Finn’s resignation was accepted under a provision of church law that lets bishops resign early if they are unable to fulfill their duties because of illness or another “grave” reason. Many Catholics had been calling for Finn’s removal since before his conviction. Advocates for victims of child abuse praised the resignation, but renewed their calls for more accountability for church leaders who covered up abuse.
