Global leaders sought new solutions after nearly a thousand migrants drowned last week while trying to cross the Mediterranean and find refuge in Europe. So far this year almost 21,000 migrants—most of them from the Middle East and Africa—have attempted to flee violence and poverty by boat. UN Secretary-General Ban Ki Moon said the world has a moral imperative to address the crisis. Moon will meet with Pope Francis about it this coming week. This has been a key issue for the pope. He urged compassion and assistance for people he said are leaving their homelands to find a better life.
