Muslim Woman Wins Supreme Court Case over Head Scarf, Employment Discrimination, and Accommodation of Religious Practice

This week a wide spectrum of faith groups applauded the U.S. Supreme Court’s decision in favor of a young Muslim woman who had sued the Abercrombie & Fitch clothing chain, claiming it violated her religious rights. In 2008, Samantha Elauf was denied a job at one of the company’s stores because her headscarf clashed with what the chain called its “look policy” or dress code. The Supreme Court sent the case back to an appeals court that had previously ruled in favor of Abercrombie. Organizations as diverse as the Anti-Defamation League and the Council on American Islamic Relations said the decision was a victory for the rights of employees and religious minorities.
