Pope Francis this week approved the creation of a Vatican tribunal that has the power to punish bishops who fail to protect children from clergy sex abuse. Hundreds of abusive priests have been defrocked over the last decade, but this marks the first time the Vatican has created a process to investigate complaints against bishops who may have covered up abuse. Some victims’ advocates welcomed the move cautiously, saying it remains to be seen if any bishops will be disciplined.
