At the Vatican this week, Pope Francis urged prayers for migrants fleeing poverty and violence who have recently died while attempting to enter Europe. He said their deaths were “crimes which offend the entire human family.” This week at least 12 Syrian migrants drowned off the coast of Turkey, among them a three-year-old boy. In Hungary, thousands of migrants crowded a train station demanding passage to Germany. The crisis has set off a heated debate among E.U. officials about whether the Muslim immigrants are threatening “Europe’s Christian roots.” The humanitarian group Catholic Relief Services said it would increase aid to Syrian refugees.
