Nearly 60 percent of US Catholics believe abortion is a sin compared with 48 percent of the general US population. That’s according to a new survey by the Pew Research Center. However, the Pew survey on American Catholicism shows that a majority of US Catholics disagree with Church teachings on several other issues. Seven in 10 say the Church should allow birth control, and nearly 6 in 10 say women should be allowed to become priests. Three in 4 who were raised Catholic but are not anymore say they can’t see themselves returning to the Church. The survey also found that 45 percent of all Americans say they are either Catholic or are connected to Catholicism in some way.
