China Ends One-Child Policy

China has announced a change to its controversial one-child policy: all Chinese families will soon be allowed to have two children. The one-child policy was adopted in 1980 out of concern about rising population rates. Many religious groups criticized the law’s severe penalties, including forced abortions and sterilizations. Chinese leaders have now decided to increase the number of children as a way to address their country’s rapidly aging work force.
