Atheists and other secular voters are trying to flex their political muscles. Thousands gathered on the National Mall in Washington (June 4) for their second “Reason Rally.” The rally was organized to support science over religion, but this year’s main focus was the upcoming presidential election. Organizers said it was time for politicians to realize that secular people are part of an important voting bloc:
CASEY BRESCIA, Secular Coalition for America: “This is the recognition that nearly a quarter of all Americans have no religion, and to take and frame your political conversation in religion will no longer resonate.”
In recent elections, the majority of people with no religious affiliation have voted Democratic.
