A new United Nations report says the recent police killings of black people in the United States are reminiscent of the lynchings African Americans experienced in the 19th and 20th centuries. The UN working group report said the US government should do far more to protect African Americans. According to the report, the root of the problem is that police are rarely held accountable for their actions. The criticism comes as new protests erupted this week in Southern California after police fatally shot an unarmed black man who appeared to be mentally unstable. That shooting came after two black men were killed by police in Charlotte, North Carolina and Tulsa, Oklahoma.
