Candidates Increase Religious Outreach

06-600In the last days of the presidential campaign, the candidates have been stepping up their faith-based outreach. This past week, Hillary Clinton visited a Baptist church in the battleground state of North Carolina. She was joined by mothers who have lost children to gun violence. She told the congregation that it’s sometimes difficult to obey the Bible’s commandment to love your neighbor:

Hillary Clinton: “We are asked to love one another. We’re not encouraged, we are not just urged. We are commanded. Jesus said it was the greatest of his commandments.”

Clinton’s running mate Tim Kaine visited a black Baptist church in Pennsylvania and urged the congregation to vote. He also spoke about Clinton’s Christian faith. Mike Pence attended a Faith and Freedom Coalition rally in Ohio. He emphasized Donald Trump’s opposition to abortion. Trump has been doing a series of interviews targeting conservative evangelicals and Catholics. This week, he appeared twice on the Christian Broadcasting Network. That included a talk with longtime Religious Right leader Pat Robertson:

Donald Trump: “I’m pro-life. And I’ll tell you, I see more and more people going that route.”

Trump also did an interview on the Catholic Eternal Word Television Network—EWTN.
