One of the last three Shakers in the US has died. Sister Frances Carr was 89 years old and had come to the Shakers as an orphan when she was 10. Once there were thousands of Shakers in the US, well-known for their practice of celibacy, their carpentry and their music, such as the song “Simple Gifts.”  There are now just two Shakers surviving. They live at Sabbathday Lake in Maine.
