Photo Gallery: The Shangri La Estate’s Islamic Art Collection

HONOLULU, Hawaii — In the late 1930s, tobacco heiress Doris Duke built a sprawling mansion overlooking the Pacific Ocean. Inspired by her travels, she chose architectural styles from the Islamic world. For the rest of her life, Duke amassed an extensive collection of Islamic art from many countries. Today, Shangri La is open to the public through the Doris Duke Foundation for Islamic Art.
