Overview

In this lesson students will learn about the role of women in Islam as interpreted by various Muslim women. The lesson will help students understand the complicated role of women in Islam and become familiar with the current movement by “progressive” Muslim women to gain more access to the mosque. As a culminating activity, students will compare and contrast how the people they have read about throughout the lesson interpret passages from Islamic texts to explain their view of women in Islam.

Three 45-minute classes

Learning Objectives

Students will:

• Analyze Islamic texts to extrapolate how different perspectives and interpretations have come about, especially concerning women.
• Investigate how some Muslim women are challenging the traditional roles of women in Islam.
• Explore how the media represents Islamic women and compare and contrast the appearances of Muslim and non-Muslim women.
• Define key Islamic terms.
