Hundreds More Migrants Die Crossing Mediterranean

At his weekly general audience, Pope Francis expressed concern about the 300 migrants reported to have drowned near the Italian island of Lampedusa while attempting to cross the Mediterranean from Libya. The U.N. said the migrants had attempted to make the dangerous journey on four open rubber boats without food or water. In recent months, refugees fleeing Iraq, Syria, and Mali have attempted similar trips that have also resulted in many deaths.
